RESP 2300 - Expository Essay (Research Paper): Finding Articles

RESP 2300 students can use this guide to complete the expository essay (research paper) assignment.

Searching for Articles

Enter keywords related to your respiratory therapy topics into the databases below to find specific, peer-reviewed, evidence-based articles.

Evidence-Based Research

This assignment requires that you use evidence-based research to develop a point of view about a newer therapy.

What is evidence-based practice?

  • Study conducted by experts in the field.
  • Study focuses on a particular population and utilizes specific techniques to examine the population.
  • Data is collected and communicated to other experts in the field, often through a peer-reviewed academic research article.

How to identify an evidence-based article:

  • Peer-reviewed.
  • Published in a reputable academic journal or via a professional organization.
  • Contains the following sections: Introduction/Background, Methods, Data/Results, Discussion/Conclusion.

Research Tips

When using one of the library databases, make your searching easier by using these tips!

Keywords—Keywords are one way to create search strategies to locate relevant information on your topic. Keywords are the most significant words and phrases associated with your topic.

Quotation Marks/Phrase Searching—Use quotation marks to search for a specific phrase.

            Example: “respiratory therapy”

Boolean Operators: AND, OR, NOT

And—narrows a search by inclusion.

Example: "respiratory therapy" AND ventilation retrieves only sources that include both search terms, which limits the number of results.

Or—expands a search.

Example: medications OR therapeutics will retrieve sources containing either term, expanding your pool of resources.

Not—narrows a search by exclusion.

Example: "respiratory therapy" NOT pediatric retrieves only sources that contain the first keyword, eliminating sources for keywords that follow not.

Truncation—Usually using an asterisk*, increases the number of results you’ll retrieve by searching for variant endings of a word root.

Example: therap* retrieves therapy, therapies, therapeutic, etc..

Many of our databases have tools to save and cite your articles. Look for the following options:

Saving

  • Save to your computer or flash drive
  • Save to Google Drive or OneDrive
  • Save a link to the article (select permalink)
  • Email the article to your email account
  • Download and print the article

Citing

  • Select APA citation style
  • Be sure to correct your citations before adding them to your assignment! Citations from the database are rarely 100% accurate.
