Evaluating News: "Fake News" and Beyond: News Literacy

News Literacy

News Literacy: What is it and why is it important?

Not all information is created equal. Students-- and all citizens-- need to be able to distinguish between fact and fiction, between truth and misguided or purposefully misleading stories.

"News literacy" refers to the ability to use critical thinking skills to judge the reliability and credibility of news reports and information sources.

This guide is designed to provide information and resources to aid in that cause. Skills covered include:

  • Identifying Fake News: What is fake news and how do we identify it?
  • Evaluating News Sources: How do we decide what news to trust and what to avoid?
  • Avoiding Filter Bubbles: What is a filter bubble and how do I get out of it?
  • Recognizing Point of View: How do we determine point of view and detect bias?
  • Searching for News: How do we search for and select reliable news sources?

Use the tabs at the top of the guide to navigate the pages.
