Library Mission Statement:
The Lakeland Community College Library is a full partner in the teaching and learning process of the college community. As the major information resource on campus, the library supports quality opportunities for lifelong learning by acquiring materials in support of the curriculum, providing access to those materials, and teaching information literacy skills.
 

Information Literacy Instruction Program Mission Statement:
The Lakeland Community College Library Information Literacy Instruction Program seeks to support student success and lifelong learning by providing quality opportunities for the development of essential information literacy skills. 

Information literacy is the capacity to recognize the nature and extent of an information need, the skill to locate, access, and manage information, and the ability to evaluate information critically and use it responsibly. The library, as Lakeland’s leading information resource, is well positioned to advance information literacy initiatives at the college. In accordance with the Lakeland learning outcome Uses Information Effectively, the Information Literacy Program prepares the 21st century learner to access and manage reliable information effectively and responsibly. As the outcome states, the information literate learner shall

• develop an effective search strategy,
• use technology to access and manage information,
• use selection criteria to choose appropriate information,
• use information responsibly.

Faculty librarians promote the advancement of information literacy across the curriculum in the following ways:

• By offering various modes of information literacy instruction, including embedded online class instruction, online tutorials, online subject guides, credit courses, subject specific classes, and one-on-one sessions.
• By providing engaging, student-centered, active learning experiences regardless of the mode of instruction.
• By actively promoting our instruction services and information resources to the students, faculty, staff, and administration at the college.
• By collaborating with subject faculty to integrate information literacy skills and concepts into courses and assignments.
• By evaluating the effectiveness of our program to foster continuous improvement.
• By pursuing professional development opportunities to refresh our knowledge base and skills sets.

The Information Literacy Program is committed to being agile, changing to meet new curricular, technological, and societal demands, as it prepares students to think critically about information and supports the research needs of the college’s students, faculty, staff, and administration. In an increasingly complex and rich information environment, information literacy becomes ever more necessary to ensure academic, professional, and personal success.
